I hope at whatever time you read this it will encourage you.
Luke 1 – The story of Zacharias and Elisabeth.
Most of us have either read this story in relation to the righteousness of the couple or the birth of Jesus, but never in relation to the faithfulness of God.
I believe we are a generation that is obsessed with a “word from God” (not always a bad thing) but what happens when that “word” isn’t coming to pass? When what God said isn’t happening? When what is actually happening is in
- total contradiction
to what God said would happen?
In Luke 1:14 the angel tells Zacharias:
Thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his [John the baptist’s] birth
Now scroll down to verse 60, John’s naming ceremony. At this point Zacharias is still mute and Elisabeth makes the proclamation that the boy’s name is John and everyone objects and says “not so!”. Picture this scene in your mind, coming from an african background, I can picture this becoming very unruly.
Where is the joy and gladness the angel spoke of?
Where is the promised rejoicing?
At this time many of us would start to sweat. After broadcasting our prophecy and angelic visitation to the masses we would suddenly be overcome with feelings of nervousness, fear and possibly get defensive. We’d immediately start to question and doubt God, almost blaming Him for leading us on and embarrassing us, but this was not and is not the case.
What we must bear in mind is that:
- This vision is for a future time. It describes the end, and it will be fulfilled. If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place. It will not be delayed. NLT (Habbakuk 2:3)
The vision describes the END!!!! Why are we getting so worked up in the MIDDLE!? It will surely come even though it seems slow.
Over 2000 years later, I am sure we can all agree that we are now experiencing the gladness and joy that the angel promised the birth of John the baptist would bring.
The bible also says in Jeremiah 1:12
And the LORD said….I am watching, and I will certainly carry out all my plans.”
God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through?
We need to stop trying to get God to conform to our image and just conform to His. He is not a magician, He does not fail, He does not lie, He doesn’t joke or play with out emotions. The word was yet for an appointed time and that time may not be now!
Where is your faith? Where is your trust? Where is your peace? You gave it away at the first sight of adversity. Is God not bigger and greater than a room full of critics? He’s been in this business since before the beginning of time…I’m sure He knows what He’s doing…
I think this would be a good place to stop reading and repent…
- Lord help me to trust you more! Teach me to rest in the knowledge that you are able and have everything under control. I’m sorry for falsely accusing you and trying to coerce You into action when really Your plans are the best for me and You know what You’re doing. Forgive my pride, selfishness and unbelief. I’ve been more concerned with how I will look to the public than how I look to You. Today I decide to trust You, and when I find it hard, help me rest in Your strength, not mine. Amen
